RICHARD UNIACKE: THE REBEL
Richard Uniacke of Mount Uniacke came from Ireland. He supported the cause of revolution in Nova Scotia during the American Revolution; consequently, he was arrested, charged with treason and then marched to Halifax. Enroute to Halifax and shackled in chains, Richard came upon a lake framed with gentle, rolling hills—hills that reminded him of his native home in Ireland. Here, he thought, would be a good place for a man to raise his family, for a man to raise his castle. He vowed, on the spot, to return and build—build that is if he escaped the gallows that awaited him in Halifax. Richard managed to avoid the gallows. Family connections made the difference. Years later, Richard returned to the lake with the rolling hills where he had first uttered a vow many years before. He honoured that vow by constructing a large Edwardian mansion: one of the finest in Nova Scotia.
