THOMAS CHANDLER HALIBURTON: THE AUTHOR
Thomas Chandler Haliburton of Windsor was an internationally acclaimed author. In 1923, Ernest Hemingway said: “There are no great Canadian writers, writers that is, of the first rank, such as Hardy, Conrad, Fielding, Smollett and Joyce …. [actually] there is one: Thomas Chandler Haliburton of Nova Scotia.” Haliburton gained his reputation as a writer. He produced a literary body of work that was both varied and abundant; but, his international and enduring reputation as a writer is based on “The Clock Maker” or the sayings and doings of Samuel Slick. The work first appeared as 22 installments in a local newspaper before Joseph Howe issued a book of that same title in 1836. Thereafter, the series was frequently reprinted in Britain and the United States. For a time in the mid-19th century, Haliburton and his work rivaled the popularity enjoyed by Charles Dickens and Mark Twain.
