ANNIE HENNIGAR: THE COUNTRY DOCTOR
Annie Hennigar of Cheverie was the first “country doctor” in the Maritimes to wear a petticoat. Young Annie wanted to be a doctor. To pay for her tuition at the Dalhousie Medical School, Annie taught in a one room school house in the village of Noel. She raised the needed tuition and proceeded to medical school where she graduated in 1906—twelve years after women were first admitted as medical students. While other female doctors practiced in towns or became missionaries overseas, Dr. Annie was the first woman to practices in a rural community. She practiced in Hants County for over 40 years. Dr. Annie was also a painter. She belonged to the American Physicians Art Association and received an Award of Merit in 1946 for a painting she entitled: “Courage”.
