Jean Louis LeLoutre

JEAN LOUIS LELOUTRE: THE MISSIONARY

Abbe LeLoutre was a Catholic priest from France who established his head-quarters in Shubenacadie.  He came as a man of peace and busied himself by building churches throughout the Cobequid; however, he soon found himself as the leader of the Maritime militia, the most powerful military force in Acadia during the mid-18th century.   LeLoutre used his military might to support Catholics wanting to relocate to lands free of Protestant rule—lands that lay North of the Cobequid Mountains.  With the assistance of local leaders like Major Jean Baptiste Cope, LeLoutre was able to ensure that all Catholics, Catholics like Noel and Marie Doiron,  who wanted to leave lands controlled by Protestants could do so in relative safety.
