KATE MACARTHUR: THE SURVIVOR
Kate and her husband Capt. Henry MacArthur of Maitland sailed on a vessel built in Selma, known as the Milton. Kate sailed with her two children, Archie age 4 and Frankie age 2. Kate was pregnant. While in the mid Atlantic, the cargo of coal caught fire. All aboard got into three life boats. Kate was a musician and took her most prized possession on the lifeboat – her small organ, which she played during the 46 days. During that time, they ran out of food and water. Four days before they were rescued, Kate held in her arms her youngest son Frankie as he died of dehydration. After the rescue, Kate gave birth to a 3 pound baby who survived to become a doctor.
